| Compost is organic plant matter that has broken down usually by
a heating reaction that takes place when done properly. The heat produced
during composting will sterilize the compost and kills all the weed seeds
present.
Sterile compost can be bought at most lawn & garden supplies. Or it can be easily made from a combination of leaves, grass clippings and dirt. Avoid wood chips, or fresh (less than 6 month old) manures. Or if you use manure, make sure the compost pile heats up, as this will kill the pathogens. And after it cools off, let it age for a fall-spring season. |
