Worms are one of the most useful creatures in a garden! They aerate the soil, they mix the sand and inorganic materials with the organic materials. Everything that passes through their body increases in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium! Their tunnels allow air and water get to the roots of the plants. When a layer of compost is applied to the soil (on top of the ground) the worms tunnel up to it to feed. You may have noticed this if you ever were raking leaves in the fall, you would see hundreds of them eating the leaves. Heavy or even moderate use of pesticides, weed killers or chemical fertilizers will kill your worms. If you have a lawn near your garden do not apply any chemicals near it. After a couple of seasons the worms will make a comeback in your garden.
